When school ends
Taking your next steps beyond school can be a long and hectic process. Whether this be deciding your university, gap year, degree or even your next steps. At Mama Ruru, we want to make sure that you feel comfortable and empowered to make next steps you know is right for you.
Some people believe that university is the next step after high school. If you believe that university isn’t right for you or even it is not what you want at this current point in time, there are many other ways to use your time wisely. Some things that you can do are
Camp America
Camp America is a cultural exchange program that gives New Zealand students the chance to spend their summer (June–August) working at an American summer camp. You’ll get to be a camp counsellor or activity leader, live on-site, make friends from around the world, and travel the USA afterwards. It’s an unforgettable adventure that builds confidence, leadership skills, and looks great on your CV.
Join the Defence Force
New Zealand Defence Force offers a unique career path for school leavers who want to serve their country, learn valuable skills, and challenge themselves. Whether you're interested in the Army, Navy, or Air Force, there are roles in trades, engineering, health, logistics, combat, and more. You'll get paid to train, gain qualifications, stay fit, and be part of a close-knit team, all while making a real difference at home and overseas.
Gap year
Gap Year programs are a great option for school leavers who want to take a break before studying or working full-time. Whether you want to travel, volunteer, work, or gain life experience, a gap year gives you the chance to explore new places, meet new people, and learn more about yourself. It's a valuable opportunity to grow your confidence, independence, and skills. Plus, it can help you figure out what you really want to do next. Start working
Heading Straight into Work is a great option if you’re ready to earn money, gain independence, and build real-world experience straight out of school. Whether it’s full-time employment, a trade, or an entry-level role in a field you're interested in, jumping into the workforce helps you develop practical skills, grow your network, and figure out your career direction early on. It's a smart move if you're motivated, hands-on, and keen to learn on the job.
Travel
Traveling After School is an exciting way to explore the world, experience new cultures, and take a break before diving into work or study. Whether you're backpacking, doing a working holiday, or joining a tour, travel builds independence, confidence, and a broader perspective on life. It’s a chance to step out of your comfort zone, meet people from all walks of life, and make unforgettable memories along the way.
There are many other ways you can spend your time after you leave school. If you feel like university isn’t for you, that's okay!
However, if university is your upcoming path we want you to feel prepared and informed about the certain university or Polytech, hall or degree. There are many options in terms of universities that are suited for every individual. This can be in terms of degree, location or opportunities. If you feel like you are wanting to go to university or Polytech in New Zealand, there are 8 universities and 16 Polytech's, all located throughout New Zealand. If you are curious as to what universities offer, have a look at this website. New Zealand Universities Feel free to visit each university/Polytech website separately to understand if they have what is right for you.
However, going to a university in New Zealand is not the only option. If you feel like New Zealand, or any of the universities are not for you, there are many great international institutions that might offer what you want. For all international universities however, you must pay higher fees for being an international student. Although, New Zealand students studying in Australia can pay domestic fees.
